Psalm 37:23 says “The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives.”
The other day I was driving to my one daughter’s doctor’s appointment. We had just dropped my husband off at work, so I was using my GPS to get us to there. I usually look over all the written steps to get a general idea and try and remember them best I can. If something were to happen I’d have at least an idea of where to go next. This time I didn’t do that. I put full reliance on that device that morning.
A few steps in, a friend called. I use a cheap prepaid phone that is slowly biting the dust. When this friend called it actually turned off my GPS even though I didn’t pick up the call. Now trying to quickly and safely figure out my next maneuver, I decided not to try and reopen the GPS while driving. I was downtown and traffic was pretty heavy. I wanted to just turn into a parking lot and start over. However, I was inundated with no left turn signs and I was in the left lane.
Finally I figured I could find the expressway and even though it’d be longer, I at least knew how to get there. I was able to make a left turn and saw the expressway signs ahead. Suddenly it’s like all cars disappeared on this street. As I approached the red light, I saw a homeless man with a sign. I couldn’t read his sign, but immediately felt drawn to him. I heard the Lord say to give him money so, I honked my horn and he approached. I gave him the money and asked what I could pray for him about and what his name was. He at first looked taken back by my question. He said “It’s Billy, and just to have a good day today.” I told him my name and said, “God bless you.” before the light changed.
Driving away I started immediately to pray for Billy. Then I was overcome with laughter. God pulled one over on me! I was in the midst of Psalm 37:23. It’s not an accident my friend called at that moment, causing my GPS to fail, and my route to be altered. God wanted me to meet Billy and that was more important than the plans I made.
Since then I’ve had an overwhelming burden to keep praying for Billy. Only God knows why and what is happening in his life at those very moments I'm praying. Truth is I’ll most likely never see Billy again, but I don’t have to to pray for him.
God is in the people business, and we are the instruments He uses to carry out a lot of His plans. My challenge to you today would be to allow God to step into your schedule, your plans, your day and disrupt it. Let God order your steps today and see what happens. Don't hold so tightly to your plans that you miss opportunities to bless someone and in turn be blessed. Don’t hold so tightly to a to do list that you overlook that hurting person that could benefit from your listening ear.
The later half of that verse is “He delights in every detail of their lives.” God isn’t against us having goals for the day. God isn’t against us making plans, He just wants to be included. Invite God into your day to be a participant and not just a spectator. Then see how much more significant your day will be.
